RESEND: There was a typo in the email address for our ACE Coordinator. See below for correction.
Coaches: Our ACE Coordinator, Duane Culmore, has begun the process of making sure that all of our coaches have completed the necessary steps to Coach in our program including registration as a Coach with USA Hockey, PVAHA Background Check, and completion of CEP to the level necessary for your age group. We need to take care of these matters here at the start of the season so as to avoid issues in a few months.
Further, all Head Coaches need to check with their Assistants to ensure their compliance as well.
Please contact Duane
as soon as you can to let him know where you and your coaching staff stand on these items and he will facilitate completion.
Thanks,
George

Coaches: Eric Manning, a U16 Midget and long time NYH player, would like to participate in our Student Coach Program and needs a team to work with for this season. Eric has always exhibited admirable characteristics in his years with NYH and should make an excellent helper to whomever can make use of his services.
I have set forth all the details of the program below so you can understand what is involved in working with s Student Coach. The NYH Student Coach Program is just a couple of years old but each time it has been used, the host Head Coach has found it to be very helpful and the Student has had a great experience.
I encourage each of you, especially those coaching at the younger age levels, to give this some thought and let me know ASAP if you are interested.
Thanks,
George Chmael
NYHA STUDENT COACH PROGRAM
It is a goal of the Navy Youth Hockey Association (NYHA) to simultaneously encourage young adults to participate in coaching activities within our youth hockey program and also demonstrate a commitment to supporting an ethic of community service. As such, NYHA has an established Student Coach Program.
Any individual between the ages of 13 and 17 who is currently properly registered with USA Hockey and who wishes to participate in the NYHA Student Coach Program may do so under the conditions set forth below.
Each prospective NYHA Student Coach:
-
Must submit to the NYHA Coaching Committee a completed Student Coach application. The application can be found in the “Documents” Section of the NYHA website (www.navyyouthhockey.com).
-
Must submit to the NYHA Coaching Committee a detailed Student Coach Utilization Plan prepared by the Student Coach and the Head Coach of the team with which the Student Coach will participate. In addition to detailing how the Student Coach will be utilized, the Plan shall provide for a minimum of a mid-season and end-of-season review between Student Coach and Head Coach. A sample Plan can be found in the “Documents” Section of the NYHA website.
-
If seeking school community service credit for their participation, must provide all details of the host school’s requirements such that the Student Coach experience can be designed to meet those requirements.
-
Must receive formal approval of the NYHA Coaching Committee prior to participation.
-
Must agree to perform and complete a minimum of ten (10) hours of Student Coach activities within the season in which the Student Coach is participating.
-
Must attend an early season Student Coach training session conducted by NYHA.
-
Must always be under the supervision of a CEP-qualified, background-screened adult Coach during all practices, clinics, try-outs, and while in the locker room.
-
May help out at practices, clinics, and try-outs only and may not play during scrimmages or games.
-
May not act as the Head Coach or Assistant Coach during practices or games.
-
Must wear a helmet with full face shield, gloves, and skates while on the ice and must also wear a helmet during games while on the bench.
-
May only work with players at least one full playing age level down for their own age level.
Upon reaching the age of 18, the individual no longer qualifies to participate in the NYHA Student Coach Program and must comply with all USA Hockey and NYHA coaching and screening rules and regulations should he/she wish to continue to coach in the NYHA system.

Coaches: The Liberty Mutual Responsible Sports Program supports volunteer youth sports coaches and parents who help our children succeed both on and off the field.
While the program is a relatively recent creation, their website is rapidly growing into a goldmine of useful information for both coaches and parents regarding youth sports and the positive roles that adults can play in the youth sports experience. You can find everything from small coaching tips to guidance on how to be a good youth sports parent to nationwide studies out of the Positive Coaching Alliance headquartered at Stanford University and a whole lot more.
The NYHA Coaching Committee encourages all of our coaches to sign up to receive weekly coaching tips and to visit the site often for guidance and suggestions as to how you can be even better in your coaching role. There are podcast with coaching legends, toolkits parents, and, yes, there is even a Hockey-specifc resource center.
The website is: https://www.responsiblesports.com/default.aspx. Your fearless NYHA leaders are using it more and more but please don't let that dissuade you. You owe it to yourself, your players, and their families to have a look; you might just learn something.
